Adopt a fire hydrant this winter to help keep your neighborhood safe

The Village of Lombard is encouraging residents to “Adopt a Fire Hydrant” near their home, to make sure hydrants stay clear of snow this winter and easily accessible to firefighters during fire emergencies.

Fire hydrants that are exposed and visible will greatly speed up the response time of firefighters responding to a fire. Precious time spent by firefighters searching for, and clearing hydrants buried in snow, can make a big difference in the time it takes to get water on a fire. By adopting a hydrant and keeping it uncovered by snow, residents can help protect the lives and homes of their families and neighbors.

There is no cost for this program. Interested residents may simply donate their time and effort in ensuring a 2-3 foot circle of clearance around their adopted hydrant. This space will allow for complete access, which will help to speed up response time in a fire emergency.

For more information or to report an issue with a fire hydrant in need of repair or attention please call Public Works at (630)620-5740.
