Lombard residents may prepare their properties this fall with free leaf collections and a mulch pickup opportunity through November 28.
As of November 28, Lombard's free fall leaf collection has ended.
The Village’s Contract with Waste Management includes a free 6-week leaf collection ending the last full week of November, which coincides with the end of the annual yard waste collection. State law prohibits landfilling refuse that contains more than 10% yard waste so Waste Management must run separate trucks to deliver yard waste to farms. The majority of properties have already managed their leaves and the Village would incur an additional cost of $4,300/week to extend this service for a minority of properties. For those that haven’t yet bagged their leaves, the Village recommends mulching with a mower, which reduces the volume about 7 times, and then raking under bushes, around trees, and into gardens. In addition, the Village’s Compost Bin Grant program provides up to $80 to reimburse one bin per household. (See http://www.villageoflombard.org/272/Grant-Programs.) Residents that prefer not to compost in these ways may contact a private landscaping company to arrange disposal at their cost.”
October 2, 2015:
Free mulch will be available at all hours, through October 18th, for self-service at 19 S. Eisenhower Lane. To load vehicles larger than a pickup truck, assistance during normal business hours may be requested from the Department of Public Works. When placing mulch, it is recommended to avoid the base of trees as over mulching damages the health of trees.
The annual free leaf pick-up for residents will be held October 19th through November 28th, and will take place on regularly scheduled waste collection days. Residents may place Kraft brown paper bags, filled with leaves only, at their curbside for pick-up. There is no limit to the amount of bags that may be used. Residents who use cans are required to utilize yard waste stickers, which can be purchased for $1.90 each and are available at local stores and Village Hall. Waste Management will bring collected leaves to farm fields for composting.
Leaves and grass clippings should not be blown or raked into streets as they can block storm drains and raise phosphorus levels in local ponds and watercourses, thereby contributing to unwanted and excessive algae growth. Mulched leaves and grass left on lawns provide useful nutrients and do not cause any unnecessary harm.
The Village’s yard waste program with Waste Management runs from the first full week in April through the last full week in November. Grass clippings, twigs, branches and plant materials disposed of in cans and bags require a yard waste sticker. Properly bundled brush does not require a sticker. Bundles must be securely tied and are not to exceed 6 feet in length, 18 inches in diameter, nor 50 pounds. Individual limbs and branches must be less than 6 inches in diameter.
