Lombard’s Mosquito Abatement Program Combats Insect Population

The Village of Lombard contracts with Clarke Mosquito Control to combat mosquitoes by treating all standing waters with slow-release larvicide pellets that kill mosquito larvae, which is the most effective way to control mosquito populations.

The program includes all ponding areas and all storm catch basins, whether public or private.

The program primarily targets the Culex Pipiens mosquito species since it is a known carrier of West Nile Virus. These mosquitoes require a 7 day incubation period in standing water and they are larger but fewer in number than floodwater mosquitoes. The risk posed by Culex Pipiens mosquitoes is currently low according to the DuPage County Health Department.

Floodwater mosquitoes have increased in numbers due to extremely wet conditions. These mosquitoes are capable of breeding in small amounts of standing water or even damp vegetation. While these pests are a nuisance and their bite can cause discomfort, they do not carry West Nile Virus. To keep up with the 3 day incubation of floodwater mosquitos, spraying would have to take place every 3 days, at $9,600 per Village-wide treatment.

Since spraying for mosquitoes is only useful for short-term control and even less so for backyard areas, the Village suggests that residents may opt to purchase a can of yard spray at a hardware store for a weekend’s worth of benefit, such as for a barbeque.

Residents should make sure that their properties are clear of standing water, use repellant as needed, call the Clarke “hotline” at 800-942-2555 to report standing waters, and contact the Village at 630-620-5740 or if unsure whether a private catch basin is on the list for larviciding.
