Electronics Recycling

Electronics is one of our biggest challenges in environmentally friendly waste disposal. Recycling and proper disposal enables sustainable use of materials and prevents the release of hazardous materials into our environment. Per State of Illinois law, as of January 1, 2012 landfilling of electronics is prohibited. Thus, refuse haulers will not remove electronic devices from properties and property owners must find other avenues to discard these items. The State Statute can be found at http://www.ilga.gov/legislation/publicacts/95/PDF/095-0959.pdf

Unfortunately, the cost of collecting electronics has recently increased to the point of being cost-prohibitive to include in the Village's annual Recycling Extravaganza. This is due to complexities in the State statute regarding manufacturers’ responsibilities, recyclers’ processing costs, and also commodity market conditions. However, Goodwill’s store at 351 E. Roosevelt accepts electronics during business hours for recycling, with exception of CRT televisions and monitors. For CRT televisions and monitors, options are currently limited throughout Illinois. The following private sector options are currently available for electronics recycling.

Donate Your Computer to the People’s Resource Center
If your computer and accessories, not including inkjet printers, are less than 5 years old and functional, consider donating it to the PRC in Wheaton or Westmont. It will be used for job training and otherwise help someone in need. See http://www.peoplesrc.org/donate-food-or-goods or send an email to computers@peoplesrc.org for more information.

Waste Management - At Your Door Collection
In addition, CRTs may be collected along with Household Hazardous Waste through Waste Management’s At-Your-Door program. Per the Village’s Contract, Waste Management is providing 180 no-cost pick-ups annually for Household Hazardous Waste and other hard-to-dispose-of items, as listed here. Residents make arrangements directly with Waste Management and requests beyond the first 180 within a calendar year are subject to a fee. Scheduling begins each year on January 1st. It is suggested that residents should coordinate with neighbors to combine small volumes into a larger amount for collection. Visit www.wmatyourdoor.com, email atyourdoor@wm.com, or call 800-449-7587 for more information and to request a service.
